WHAT IS COMMUNITY SHARED AGRICULTURE?

Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is a relationship between farmers and farm supporters. Farmers commit to growing produce that is distributed to farm members over the growing season. Farm members pay for their shares in advance, which helps farms and organizations with ongoing costs and seasonal inputs. Members are welcome to visit our growing site – ketayak community kiscikana (in Victoria Park) – and to ask questions about how their food is grown.

There are lots of different variations of CSAs – your askîy box share supports the askîy project internship – indigenous and non-indigenous youth growing together towards a sustainable food economy. WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE PICK-UPS?

Pick-ups are Wednesdays:

• Pick up at the garden! Boxes will be available Wednesday afternoons and evenings.

OR

• Pick up in a neighbourhood location. Members can volunteer to be a pick-up location. We will announce these hours and locations later this spring.

If you are unable to make a pick up, just send a friend or family member in your place.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

The 2024 askîy CSA Box is a $350 subscription with 11 pick-up dates – weekly from July 3 to Sept 4, and a larger box Harvest Box at the end of the season (pick up date to be announced).

Each box will contain 5 or more seasonal items. Each box, on average, is valued at $30, but in a typical season, you can expect a wider variety of produce as we move through the summer into fall. The Harvest Box has an expected value of $50.

WHAT WILL I FIND IN A SHARE?

This season, we’ll be growing over 75 varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers. We choose varieties that grow well in our climate and growing season, focusing on veggies that are well-loved by most folks. We always choose a few varieties that are new and fun to experiment with.

CAN I MAKE ANY SUBSTITUTIONS IN MY BOX?

No, the contents of the boxes depends on what is in the gardens, and is a result of some variables that are out of our control – we just won’t have pumpkins ready in July! Boxes will also include recipe ideas, especially for less common vegetables or herbs.
